Estimating Unobserved Individual Heterogeneity through Pairwise Comparisons

چکیده
This paper proposes a new methodology to study environments with unobserved agent heterogeneity. We focus on the settings where the heterogeneous factor takes values from an unknown finite set, and the economic model yields testable implications in the form of pairwise inequalities. The method produces a consistent classification of economic agents according to their unobserved types. The paper verifies that the method performs quite well in Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate empirical usefulness of the method by estimating the model of first-price auction characterized by both agent and auction level unobserved heterogeneity using the data from California highway procurement market.

Job search theory, labour supply and unemployment duration
This paper presents a structural model of sequential job search, in which the individual decision makers incorporate labour supply in the job acceptance decision. The model satisfies the reservation wage property. Given the level of the offered wage rate, individuals can choose the number of weekly working hours optimally, by maximizing utility subject to the budget constraint, Specific attenti...

متن کاملReturns to MBA quality: Pecuniary and non-pecuniary returns to peers, faculty, and institution quality ¬リニ
A large literature has focused on estimating the returns to schooling and has typically done so by incorporating institutional heterogeneity in quality along merely one dimension (such as average SAT scores). Using longitudinal survey data of registrants for the GMAT exam and school level information from other sources, we create, in the context of graduate management education, multiple indice...
متن کاملUnobserved Worker Quality and Inter-Industry Wage Differentials†
This study quantitatively assesses two alternative explanations for inter-industry wage differentials: worker heterogeneity in the form of unobserved quality and firm heterogeneity in the form of the firm’s willingness to pay (WTP) for workers’productive attributes. We develop an empirical model of labor demand and apply a two-stage nonparametric procedure to recover worker and firm heterogenei...

Unobserved Individual and Firm Heterogeneity in Wage and Tenure Functions: Evidence from German Linked Employer-Employee Data We estimate wage and job tenure functions that include individual and firm effects capturing time-invariant unobserved worker and firm heterogeneity using German linked employeremployee data (LIAB data set). We find that both types of heterogeneity are correlated to the ...
